Kitty slipped her arm through Matt’s as they strolled along the street enjoying the morning air. ‘What shall we do now? I must admit I’m starving.’

‘Shall we find a café for breakfast and then we had better go and tell your grandmother what’s happened?’ Matt suggested.

They walked on in the summer sunshine along several more streets before entering a more commercial part of the city. Matt spotted a small pavement café with tables and chairs surrounded by pots of red geraniums.

A few minutes later, a cafetière of fresh coffee was placed in front of them along with a basket of fresh-baked croissants and generous glass dishes of butter and strawberry jam.

‘Do you think Inspector LeJeune will let Julian go? I can’t see why he has gone after him in the first place,’ Kitty said as she spread jam lavishly on her croissant.

‘Except for his relationship with Simone,’ Matt reminded her as he brushed crumbs of flaky pastry from his tie. ‘That business about Simone having a child was quite a shock, wasn’t it?’

‘It was. I wonder who else might know about that or if it’s important to the case? I suppose though this speculation about Sir Humphrey’s relationship with Simone makes him of interest too. Perhaps even more so given his commercial connection with House of Dido. I’d love to discover who that woman was who Grams and I saw him with last night. It definitely was a business meeting of some sort.’ Kitty licked a small crumb from the corner of her mouth.

‘That may be true, but he could have many business interests. She may even have been giving him legal advice. Much as we have just advised Eliza to do,’ Matt said as he picked up his coffee cup.

Kitty was forced to admit he was right. It just seemed so odd. Why have a business meeting on an evening in a high-class restaurant? Surely he could conduct his business during the day at the person’s office or place of work. No, there was something else afoot there, she was sure of it.

They finished their breakfast before continuing along the street. The café owner had assured Matt that they would find taxis at a rank there who could take them back to their hotel.

Kitty had quite enjoyed her breakfast in the sunshine and if it were not for the investigation she would have been relishing her unexpected Parisian holiday. Grams was in the hotel lobby when they returned having taken her breakfast in the dining room.

To Kitty’s surprise she was not alone. Patricia Maddox was sitting with her.

‘Patty, this is a surprise,’ Kitty greeted the girl warmly as Patty rose to kiss her cheeks.

‘I came to see you and ran into your grandmother, and she said Eliza had telephoned you to go over. I assumed it must be something to do with this break-in at my apartment.’ Patricia looked anxious as she retook her seat.

‘We just saw Inspector LeJeune and he said Nathalie had not been badly hurt, so I think she will be out of hospital soon,’ Kitty said.
